Rowing New Zealand acknowledges the extremely sad passing of former Olympic Champion, Simon Dickie, who passed away yesterday at the age of 66.

Simon was just 17 when he was selected to cox the men’s four at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where the crew won gold. This was New Zealand’s first ever Olympic rowing gold.

In 1972 Dickie was again crowned an Olympic Champion when he lead the men’s eight to victory in Munich.

Simon returned for one final Olympic campaign in 1976 (Montreal) where he coxed the men’s eight to a bronze medal.

Rowing New Zealand extends its sincere condolences to the Dickie family, and his many friends.

In 2014, Simon was featured in the March edition of the OarSport magazine’s «blast from the past» article. Dickie reflected on his illustrious rowing career with incredible insight, recalling details about racing at three Olympic Games. A copy of this article has been posted below.
